DESCRIPTION: Our half-day city tour will give you the opportunity to explore Cusco and learn about it from a historic and cultural perspective. Your guide will give you a thorough tour at every site along the way, teaching you about the architecture and ancient traditions, as well as traditions that local people continue to practice today. The tour lasts from 1pm to 6pm.

ITINERARY:

city-tour02We will start the tour at 1pm at the most important temple of the Inca Empire, The Sun Temple, known as Koricancha. Here, you can observe detailed and intact architecture, and within the temple you will see smaller temples dedicated to the moon, rainbow, stars, lightning and thunder, among others. Today, the Santo Domingo church stands on top of the temple. You will see fine Incan and European architecture, paintings, woodcarvings, ceramics, metallurgy and much more. From there, we will walk a few blocks to the Cathedral. Some of the main features in the Cathedral are the altars, the silver chapel, the paintings from the Cusqueñan School, the woodcarvings in the pulpits, and the catacombs, among others.

city-tour03From the Cathedral, we will go to an important religious site, Sacsayhuamán. Although the site was religious, the Spanish considered it a military fortress because of its location and the way it was built. At Sacsayhuamán, we celebrate IntiRaymi (celebration of the sun) each year on June 24. You can see the Qenqo that represented the Andean constellations and the concept of the three worlds, each one representing sacred animals: the condor, puma, and snake. You will also see Puca Pucara, the military center of its time, strategically located at the entrance to control who could enter and exit the site. The people who typically visited the site came from many different parts of Peru, including the Amazon region.

We will take one last stop at Tambomachay, known as the temple of water, where the Incas practiced religious traditions tied to water in order to rejuvenate the land. This tradition is known as the fountain of eternal youth. From there, we will return to the city and drop you off at your hotel or the main plaza at 6pm
